Hey folks,

Sorry for the late delivery of the Thursday newsletter. Yesterday was suboptimal. BUT I have been thinking a lot about the ever-evolving news around AI-based writing…uh…tools and their use in producing books and book-related things. I’m talking about ChatGPT but that’s not the only bot out there that will write things for you. On Twitter, I joked we might need to put on our website that we don’t accept books written with AI assistance1 and you know what? We might really need to, jfc.

Is this really happening, you ask? YEP. I’ve seen different sources reference 200 or 300 books found on Amazon that say they were written or co-written using AI, and those are just the ones that reveal such info. I am sure there are many, many more. It looks like people are doing it to make a buck, which is not shocking at all, of course. (I mean, who wouldn’t buy a children’s picture book about a squirrel and trickle down economics?) And if people knowingly and willingly want to buy those books, what’s the harm? It’s fine if it’s only happening on Amazon, right?
