I knew that researching query letters and publishers would deter me from finishing the first draft, so I avoided doing so until it was nearly too late. Now that I'm editing, I'm beginning to consider what comes next, but I'm saving that thought for later.
Thank you so much for this advice. I purposely haven’t looked into querying or the publishing process until I’m almost ready because I knew it would stop me writing my first draft. Not that I’m in the editing stage I’m slowly starting to think about what the next steps will be but always book marking it for later!
They aren't discrete. To enable maximum efficiency and as you say focus we need to be immersed in one at a time for sure. But earlier chapters might be well along with editing for me before later ones are edited or even written. Have to keep the direction of the whole in mind as the end nears. Don't want to get a draft of everything if thrust changes midstream.
Such great encouragement, Kate! I’m at the end of writing and now in the thick of editing. Appreciate your advice to take each step as it comes, rather than feeling pressure to have it all figured out at the start.
I’m so happy you wrote this — every project seems unmanageable when I’m lost in the details and too focused worrying about a future I haven’t even fully set into motion. (And let’s just say I’ve been doing far to much of each of those). Thank you!

This is so true. It’s too easy to try and jump ahead when you really need to just take it one step at a time!
