Ugh, those scam emails are the worst! It's so annoying that people try to take advantage of writers like that. Good tips here, though – definitely gonna double check those email addresses from now on! Thanks for the info! https://jichangtuijian.shop/
So sorry, but I had a total tech meltdown (the rural France kind - Olympic-level) and lost all my subscribers when my original Substack vanished into the digital void.
There are also lots of scams targeting already published authors for promoting existing books. There’s a group that promises shelf space in bookstores in NJ off all places. Also had another one offering some kind of media placement for a fee. The easiest way to identity these is google the name of the company and the word scam.
We so often only see what we want to see. This is a great breakdown of how to look more critically. If something is legit, it should be easy to confirm.
Thank you for this service, Kate. Someone was impersonating me a few years back and, although I’ll never know what damage they may have gotten away with, I got it shut down. I wanted to alert you and your readers that there’s a typo in your sample legitimate emails: it’s @stmartins.com, not @stamartins.com.
My son sent me a screenshot of a text message scam the other day, and the sender’s address was a dead giveaway, but he hadn’t checked that part yet because he was too worried that he may have unpaid fines. With the advent of AI-simulated faces and voices, posts like this are becoming more and more valuable. Thank you for a thorough breakdown of how to spot a scam email!

Hi there Kate,
Just a quick note from me @ A French Table
So sorry, but I had a total tech meltdown (the rural France kind - Olympic-level) and lost all my subscribers when my original Substack vanished into the digital void.
Thanks so much for following me - I’d be so grateful if you’d resubscribe here: https://afrenchtable1.substack.com
More stories, ducks, and general disarray coming soon - with fewer Wi-Fi failures. Thanks in advance!
Jenny

I have some scams from MacMi11an publishers that look exactly like that.
Mine always refer to taking part in an academic conference… like an academics buy any artwork! lol!
Anyhow, they had me fooled for about half an hour, because they read a small portion of my book in the email, as if they cared.
The two L’s in MacMi11lan were switched with two ones 11 to try to fake the MacMillan name.

Such a valuable breakdown for people
Any idea what the end goal is with this? They don't seem to be asking for money (unless that comes later).
This is such valuable information. Thank you so much!
Thank you for this. Wouldn’t have known any of it. Much appreciated!
I love the way you go through all the minor (and major) clues that this is not what it seems! Fun read. Thanks!
So helpful. Thank you!
Ugh I get so many of these. For my already-published children's book no less! Thanks for this.
